PASSING AN ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN IN ILLINOIS

From the Highland Park massacre during a Fourth of July parade to the everyday gun violence that plagues communities across Chicago, gun violence has defined 21st-century Illinois. It remains the number one cause of death for children in Illinois, and the crisis has only worsened due to the availability of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.

In September 2022, Fenton teamed with the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention PAC (G-PAC), the state’s leading gun violence prevention organization, to launch the Halt The Assault campaign to pass this historic legislation that goes to new lengths to keep Illinois children and families safe.

run, hide, fight

Communities that have not experienced mass shootings or routine gun violence may not have the same understanding of the issue. This concept helps everyone feel the threat of gun violence in everyday life. 95% of American public schools drill students on lockdown procedures. Publishing the run, hide, fight procedure in everyday settings is a stark reminder that gun violence is everywhere and doesn’t discriminate who the victims are.

By the Numbers

While everyone knows that gun violence is an epidemic, most don’t know the statistics of the toll it has taken on the community – especially our children. While mass shootings make up less than 1% of gun violence, it gets the most coverage, especially when children are involved. We recommend using portraits of children with the shocking statistics of how they are impacted to solicit an emotional response from people.
